Same mission, three power sources. Here's how a hydrogen PEM fuel-cell module stacks up against the lithium-polymer and lithium-ion packs most Indian drone fleets run today.
| Metric | Hydrogen fuel cell | Li-ion pack | LiPo pack |
|---|---|---|---|
| Energy density (usable, by weight) | ~2–3× higher than lithium packs at the system level | ~150–250 Wh/kg (cell level) | ~150–200 Wh/kg (cell level) |
| Typical flight-time gain | 2–4× longer | Baseline | Baseline (shortest of the three) |
| Refuel / recharge time | Minutes (canister swap) | 45–90 min (fast charge) | 45–90 min (fast charge) |
| Usable cycle life | Thousands of operating hours per stack | ~500–800 charge cycles | ~200–300 charge cycles |
| Performance in cold / high altitude | Stable — proven in sub-zero, high-altitude operations | Degrades in cold | Degrades in cold |
| Moving parts / maintenance | None in the stack; periodic membrane & balance-of-plant checks | None, but capacity fade requires pack rotation | None, but capacity fade requires pack rotation |
| Weight vs. mission length | Scales by adding hydrogen, not more cells | Longer missions need proportionally heavier packs | Longer missions need proportionally heavier packs |
| Field infrastructure needed | Hydrogen canister supply / electrolyser | Charger bank + stable grid or genset power | Charger bank + stable grid or genset power |
| Upfront module cost | Higher | Lower | Lower |
| Cost per flight hour at scale | Lower — fewer pack replacements, less standby fleet | Rises with pack replacement frequency | Rises fastest — shortest cycle life of the three |
Figures are indicative industry ranges compiled from published fuel-cell and UAV battery specifications, intended to guide a first fleet-economics conversation — not a quoted specification for any single airframe. Exact numbers depend on the fuel-cell module, canister size, airframe and payload; ask us for a mission-specific estimate.
Lithium packs remain the right call for short sorties, low upfront budgets, and sites with no hydrogen supply chain nearby. They're simpler to source, cheaper per unit, and well understood by every drone technician.
Hydrogen earns its higher upfront cost on missions where flight time, turnaround speed, or cold/altitude reliability are the actual bottleneck — not on every mission.
If your fleet spends more time charging than flying, or your missions are capped by pack endurance rather than by the job itself, a hydrogen conversion is worth pricing out.
